The museum

The open-air-museum of Moordorf is situated on a 3,2 ha big area of peatland. It deals with the colonisation of the peatland based on an edict of cultivation by Friedrich II of Prussia in1765. In contrast to peatland cultivation as it was done in the “Fehnkultur” the Prussian moor colonisation had no support.

The extremely miserable conditions for the cultivation get obvious in the development of the village Moordorf for about 200 years. The museum of poverty shows the living and working conditions: housing conditions, peat cutting, Moorbrandkultur, buckwheat growing, handicrafts and working techniques.

The huts made of sods or pieces of turf, the authentic rebuild houses made of clay as well as the original brick made houses impart the idea of the poor circumstances and the social differences. In our exhibition hall you will find more information and background reports: Why did these colonists settle in the moors? Who were these people? Where did they come from?

Films for children and adults (approx. 10 min) can be watched:

After these films you are recommended to take a walk around the premises along the huts and buildings. A log paved path leads you through the highland moor to an observation deck. Temporarily German White Heath Sheep are pasturing there. Here you can find also typical plants of this habitat like sundew.

The responsible body of the Moormuseum Moordorf is a society of the same name which was founded in 1979.

The museum was opened in 1984.

• Summer: (beginning of spring to Nov. 11 th) Monday to Sunday 10am – 6 pm (Admission till 5 pm)
• During wintertime group visits are possible as per agreement.
